(Amway Center, Orlando FL) They were funny and sometimes raunchy, but the 85 South Live comedy show had the audience rolling with laughter for a little over 2 hours of on-the-spot comedic improv.
DJ Filthy Rich was spinning the vinyl as attendees found their seats. The weather outside of Amway looked as though Orlando was going through a hurricane. So as the seats began to fill up within Amway, DJ Filthy Rich had the audience nodding their heads to his old school beats. As we got closer to the show start, opening act Navv Greene who played the part of 'Cousin' in 2021's Coming 2 America, warmed up the audience. He had some pretty good jokes about Covid and set the tone for the night. The crowd was receptive to him and laughing pretty good. We're off to a good set.
The emcee came out and introduced tonight's 3 headliners: DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller, and Chico Bean. Each of these gifted comics are fire, but as demonstrated on Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out whenever these men are paired together, you'll want to get back and out of the way. For more than 90 solid minutes, they improvised their entire set drawing content by working through the crowd. At one point early on, they joked about Covid, then poked fun at white people, and then laughed about the omnipresent lizard population of Florida.
They threw shade at Disney(World) and joked about what would happen if the Disney costume characters didn't take photos in the park with their kids.
A "t*tty-cam" searched the audience for some of our more endowed women attendees, when the camera suddenly found a willing participant gifted with H-cup chest proportions decided to bare it all and shocked even the comedians themselves.
A freestyle rap spontaneously ensued when the 3 comics started joking amongst one another when the DJ dropped a beat to it. Then tonight's 'Pu$$y A$$ Cracker' was birthed and became a recurring theme for the remainder of the night.
Somehow, what appeared to be a very realistic 'Goofy' head costume prop found its way onto the stage. DC Young Fly put the head on then joked that someone had to be on cocaine to wear it, citing the heat from within. Then circling back to the 'what would happen if the Disney character didn't take a photo with my family' comment from earlier, he seemed to suddenly understand the reasoning now.
Continuing to poke fun at Disney(World) which was only 20 minutes away from tonight's Orlando show at Amway Center, the improv artists joked about Disney movies and called out some extremely interesting observations.
We somehow found our way into Church as the comics improvised a 'Sprinkle in the Name of Jesus' gospel song for about 10 minutes.
They went back to joking about Florida during the pandemic, calling out Florida's more 'open' approach toward social distancing over the past couple of years.
It's pretty difficult to reveal any spoilers here, as I believe each show's material will innately be centered around themes specific to the city / state that specific show is in. For instance, I don't believe their Atlanta show will contain any of the topics that were discussed tonight, outside of maybe Covid. But, there's no rehearsed skit, there's no preset routine. These 3 comics improvised for the entire time they were up on stage and it was a pretty entertaining show so long as you didn't get easily offended by references to race, slavery, or sex.
I've attended a lot of comedy shows, but none that focused on the improv for the entire show. If you're looking for a show that you can re-tell jokes later on to your friends, you're going to have a hard time unless you've got the comedic genius timing that these gentlemen had on stage. Although you won't likely be able to retell any of their jokes the next day at work, you will likely be able to talk about how much you were laughing at the show, and for that reason alone you should check this one out. But some advice: don't sit anywhere these comics can see you unless you want to become part of the punchline, in which case you'll be the one everyone else will be talking about at work the next morning.
